These are my character designs for Michael Morpurgo's version of Beauty And The Beast entered for Waterstones Picture This 2011
I found the Beast took the longest to design, I didn't want it to look like Disney's beast and didn't want to go with the old style anthropomorphism. Her dad was the easiest to design because I saw how i wanted him straight away :) It was fun researching into 19th century dresses as inspiration for Bell.
I doodled these a while ago and decided to create a more finished piece.
Work in progress shot of what I've go so far. The lighting and colour has been quite a challenge, I'm constantly changing and re-working colours searching for the best result.
I decided to try out inking Oscar as an experiment for what the comic could look like. I need more practice with inks yet, I think for the final comic I might go with pencil.
I used to play this game on the Amiga when I was little and after seeing a new remake released I just had to play it again.
The original pixel graphics are so wonderfully rendered and deigned, they have done a really nice job on the new graphics too, and the added voices fit the characters perfectly. This has to be one of my all time favourite games! so I got inspired to do some sketches of the main characters Guybrush and LeChuck. These guys are fun to draw so I'll probably be coming back and doing a full picture with them sometime.
Brendan and The Secret of Kells is now out in UK. I saw this film about a year ago, its one of my favourite animated movies and and i've been in love with it ever since. Its one of a kind and truly beautiful!
I've just got some watercolour sketches for now, including doodles I did while watching Brendan and The Secret of Kells, and a girl.
Like any artist, Im always looking for new ways to learn and improve my art. John K recommends you to study from Preston Blair to learn how to break things down.
The front fist angle the hardest
I plan to continue with a few more of these studies, then ill look at real hands and try to apply my own construction in a similar way.
Its his first day chimney sweeping and Oscar is nervous
Louis is going to be looking out for him....... well sort of.
Just stay out of the Master Sweeps way! >:[
This drawing was originally on A2 so it was tricky to scan on A4 scanner!
This is another cut i was considering
Screenshot of early progress.
I always start my rendering by first creating an underlay to use as a guidance for my lighting. I also make the lineart brown I just like that softer natural feeling to my lines when i draw Oscar.
